Spent 4 nights at Diamond Head Hotel. It is the best spot on the beach, hands down!
Booked a basic Gulf-view room, upgraded to a premium Gulf-view which added a view of the pool. The premium version is what they show for timeshare viewings, it adds premium counter tops, cabinets, dishes, dishwasher, blender, toaster, counter top range, linens and more - everything you need for a longer-term stay.
The balcony is very nice and roomy, table and 4 chairs as well as 2 chaise lounges. Plenty of room to relax and all are screened. We stayed in room 406 which faced the east (southern gulf view toward Naples), very nice sunrises. The room is very clean and in good shape, and maid service is very prompt and does an excellent job. Matt and the other 2 bellmen were very helpful and we want to thank them for their help in getting around the area.
Restaurants -
Cottage was our favorite hands down. The Gulf Shore Grill is the indoor section, the Cottage the beach bar section, same menu. The hotel told us to go there when I asked for the best burger on the beach. It was definitely not a good burger, but my wife enjoyed the best taco salad she ever had (both chiken and beef). So we returned and I had the best Philly cheesesteak ever (the sliced sirloin on the menu). The food is excellent and the servers and bartenders are very friendly and on the ball. Best spot on the beach for us.
Junkaroo was a lively spot and we had fun there. Just a short 1/2 mile stroll from the Diamond Head.
Beached Whale we went to twice but we really didn%26#39;t care for it, being across the street from the beach. May be good for others though.
We thoroughly enjoyed Miceli%26#39;s Italian Restaurant just across the bridge on the right past Main St. Excellent food and great people - this has to be the best Italian place in the area. Try their special penne w/ oil and garlic - wow!
Parrot Key on Main was great as well - crab cakes were delicious, great burger, and we really enjoyed the outdoor entertainment. Specials on whole lobster and giant drab legs but we just couldn%26#39;t eat that much!
A new place opened last summer in Times Square (the name escapes me, west toward the bridge). Great bar, all wicker walls and ceilings and white bar stools. Neat menu, we didn%26#39;t get a chance to eat there, but this place is the new hot spot for locals and tourists alike.
Shopping in Times Square was a 1-time deal for us, primarily souvenir shops you see everywhere as others have commented. There are 3 or 4 shops that we would return to though. And there weren%26#39;t really bars or restaurants we cared for in TS other than the new one above. Friends who had visited the areaa 25 years ago recommended the top o the mast and other placed but they have seen their hey day I guess.
Sanibel was nice, as expected, but we really loved Captiva. I%26#39;ll post that review on the Sanibel/Captiva web sites. But it%26#39;s a visit not to miss.
So much to enjoy even with the colder climate, we will return. We left to spend a week in Cocoa Beach with family but we really must return to the Fort Myers area for the beauty, friendly people, and wonder dining and entertainment experiences we enjoyed there. That will compete with our planned trips to Mexico and BVI but we%26#39;ll fit it in!
Thank you all, pictures to follow!
Diamond Head, Fort Myers Beach Trip Report
Glad you enjoyed your visit - it%26#39;s always nice to read these trip reports. The restaurant near Times Square you mentioned is the Yucatan. Come back soon!
Diamond Head, Fort Myers Beach Trip ReportI realize now I stated many opinions and I could%26#39;ve been a bit more objective, as there are many great choices for hotels on the island, as well as excellent restaurants.
But we did enjoy ourselves there and thank you and others for the excellent feedback here.
Will be staying at Diamond Head next month. Is it easy to get a drink at the pool? Are you allowed to bring your own drinks from your room?
Pool bar is right next to the pool, waitress delivers drinks or you can get your own from the bar. Not sure about bringing your own drinks into the pool area as you have to walk through the bar area to access the pool. Of course you can take a cooler a few steps further to the beach too.
Nice trip report. Diamond head resort is in a great location. Glad you enjoyed your visit.
Thanks for your report, got some good tips
