Looking for clean value place, preferably less than $90 a night, within a mile or 2 of Shands Hospital and with wireless Internet service. Microwave or refrig would be a plus. Tnx for suggestions.
Seeking Shands-area motelCall the hospital direct and they will give you recommendations. This has always worked best for me.
Seeking Shands-area motelI asked the hospital for hotel recommendations on my last visit and they gave me a list of 5 possibilities. The Hilton Conference Center sounds luxurious but pricey, but the 4 others are all no-frills places that receive very negative reviews from the Trip Advisor members.
Let me ask my daughter who lives in Jacksonville and will get back with you......
I have just talked to my daughter and she said unless you stay at the Hilton or the Omni you should not stay anywhere near Shands nor should you walk around outside there day or night. Don%26#39;t want to scare you but her friend is a ER nurse there and it is a dangerous area. My daughter said you will not be able to be within a mile or two..she suggested out by the airport which is about 15 minutes or at a B%26amp;B in Riverside whose sites are as follow:
www.bbonline.com
www.stjohnshouse.com
www.riverdaleinn.com
www.innatoakstreet.com
www.dickert-house.net
Riverside/Avondale have nice residential areas
If I can be of further help send me a private e-mail. I am heading to JAX next weekend
Gringo1, the Jacksonville Shands is indeed in a bad neighborhood. I doubt that%26#39;s the case for Gainesville. If the question was about Gainesville, the options are:
13th street (an old commercial strip with old motels) including (just of 13th) the quirky little Rush Lake Motel with its own lake that%26#39;s been serving Shands users for many years. Wireless? Seems a bit doubtful. 13th Street has several nice restaurants but I don%26#39;t have any idea which is in good shape. I think the Paramount Plaza was there in the 1970s as an upscale conference hotel. It could be worth investigating.
A cluster of hotels at I-75 and Archer Road (major traffic mess but lots of choices)
and of course the very nice Hilton.
No worries walking in or around the Shands area day or night - this is Gainesville, not Jacksonville. Hotels near Shands would include the aforementioned Rush Lake Motel (closest, but definitely no frills), Paramount Plaza on SW 13th St., and Hilton on SW 34th St. There is also a Marriott Residence Inn further south on 13th St., and the Holiday Inn University Center at the corner of 13th St. and University Ave. Further afield, there are a bunch of newer motels clustered around the I-75 interchange at Archer Rd. This is probably still within your 2 mile radius to Shands, but inbound traffic in the morning and outbound traffic in the afternoon is miserable.
You can try and find a good rate on Priceline.com for the Hilton. I used their name your own price and got the hilton for about $60 for one night.
Another hotel you might try is the Paramount Plaza, it%26#39;s not too far from Shands and is the nicest place on SW 13th. Otherwise down on SW 13th street it isn%26#39;t a great area of town, but I would stay here if needed because of my budget.
Your best cleanest values will be down off Archer Road near the interstate. It%26#39;s a direct shot to Shands from there. Many of these are new within the last few years, and even the farthest place, like the Holiday Inn Express on the other side of I-75 is only 3 miles away. There%26#39;s plenty of selection in this area and great restaurants nearby. In comparison the Hilton is 2.2 miles away from Shands.
Hope this helps!
Tnx Larkie %26amp; everyone for your input...We are trying Sleep Inn near I-75, based on excellent reviews here and on Hotels.com. $67 a night seems reasonable.
