Is it worth it in May ?

May is when we are going to be in Florida but the official Everglades website seems to suggest that it is a less than ideal time to visit (humid weather, mozzies, no wildlife to see). Please could someone give us an honest opinion, is it worth it or would we be better off going elsewhere ?

Thanks

Is it worth it in May ?

Early May would be fine. Our last trip was in July, so I%26#39;m not sure I%26#39;m one to discourage anyone from visiting at anytime of year. There are always alligators and some wildlife, but many of the birds will be moving on to cooler areas as the month goes on. You might consider Sanibel as an alternative (West side, outside Ft. Meyers) for wildlife and shell collecting.

Thank you that is useful especially as we will be there late May and had been recommended Sanibel by others so will check that out next.

Sanibel is a beautiful beach area to visit and you should definitely check that out as well. Everglades in May is still worth it though. It%26#39;s less crowded, but the summer rains haven%26#39;t started yet, so the only real problem is the oppressive heat (over 30 degrees every day) and humidity. May is prime Black Bear season, so visit Corkscrew Swamp (near Naples) or one of the many other nature trails at dawn or dusk and you%26#39;ll probably see deer, bobcats, maybe bears, and if you%26#39;re extremely lucky a panther. The exotic birds that the everglades is famous for, however, migrate north, and aren%26#39;t as plentiful in May. Panthers are much more elusive at this time of year, and alligators tend to stay under water to keep cool in the heat, although you%26#39;ll still definitely see them, just not as many.

May isn%26#39;t the best time to visit, but there are pros and cons. It%26#39;s still worth it, just be prepared for lots of heat and humidity. I%26#39;d recommend combining your trip with a stay in Naples, Fort Myers, or Sanibel beaches which are beautiful and you can see marine life such as dolphins and endangered manatees right at the beach in these locations. Unless you%26#39;re into the man-made features in Miami, this part of Florida is the most beautiful and wild.
