On our way back home from our T%26amp;C vacation we have a short layover in Miami airport (6hrs) Would we be able to realistically see anything in Miami given the short period of time (which would actually be shorter than 6 hrs when you take in to account check in times and travel time.) How long is the trip in a taxi to downtown? What is there to see or do? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Airport layover
MIA%26#39;s website has section on things to do on a layover and any off airport ideas are listed as for five hours or longer- I would think you would be cutting things close and to avoid stress I personally would look at the ideas for a three hour layover- all of which are inside the Airport:

The tourist area of Miami is some distance east of the airport - the area near it is sort of industrial and not very attractive , at least in my opinion.
Airport layover
Thank you for the information.
I didn%26#39;t check the airport%26#39;s suggestions.
The airport is just north of Coral Gables, which has much more of a ';downtown'; than the real one. Possibly just as important, traffic is not usually a problem (there%26#39;s a back route from the airport%26#39;s car rental area).
You could possibly go to the Miracle Mile shopping street, the mall, or the Biltmore Hotel and wander around a bit or have a meal.
I actually just talked to someone who lived in Miami and he suggested Coral Gables too. Thanks for your input.
With such a short layover, Coral Gables might be a good option. Take a taxi to Miracle Mile, walk around the area, see historic City Hall modeled after Italian Renaissance architecture, and then visit Venetian Pool and Biltmore Hotel which are all in the same area. This isn%26#39;t really downtown or Miami Beach but it%26#39;s close to the airport and you can do it all in a short period of time. There%26#39;s nothing really special or famous about this area but it%26#39;s one of the nicest suburbs of Miami and it is safe and beautiful.
