orlando and the keys

Hi!Planning our summer trip to Orlando %26amp; the Keys, flying to Miami then hoping for 1 night Key Largo (day we arrive), drive down to Key West for 2 nights then back up to Key Largo for another night before our drive to Orlando. Does this sound achievable? And what would you recommend to see/do on our two days driving up %26amp; down the Keys? We are a family group - Grandma (71), myself, my husband %26amp; my 2 sons age 15 years and 19 months! Thanks!

orlando and the keys

WOW - quite an age range. It%26#39;ll be hard to ffind things that both Grandma and #1 son will both like to do, and participate in.

Any driving trip is acheivable. You may be exhausted from driving and sitting, but you can do it.

Flying into MIA and driving top Key Largo is easy. The trip from Key Largo to Key West is a 100 mile trip. An easy 2 - 2 1/2 hour drive.

Search this forum for 10,000,000 different things to do.

I%26#39;d look at stops at Robbies, Aqua Ranch, Turtle Hospital, Dolphin Research Center, Blue Hole, Bat Tower, old 7 Mile Bridge,

Shopping: Latitude 25, World Wide Sportsman, Fish Lips, Lazy Gecko,

Eating: Hog Heaven, Sparky%26#39;s Landing, Keys Fisheries, Square Grouper, Mangrove Mamas, Hog Fish, Hurricane Hole,

Research these things, then come back to us and ask about the places you want to see and do.

orlando and the keys

That%26#39;s great thanks! I%26#39;ll start looking into a few of those suggestions now that the driving distances aren%26#39;t a %26#39;no no%26#39;! I realise the drive from Key Largo to Orlando will be a long one, but we have all day just to drive it. As long as we have time to see some sights on our two days driving to and from Key West.

We do the drive as often as we can (Orlando to Key West), but we can%26#39;t wait to get to Key West. We keep the stopping to a minimum. ;)

Hi DisneySuzy,

Key Largo to Orlando is definitely an all day trip (we did Titusville to Islamorada at Christmas). Just plan to stop somewhere nice along the way for lunch that will help to break things up a bit.

Cheers!

Wine-4-2

The longest ride you%26#39;ll have is from Key Largo to Orlando. It all depends on how long you want to make the trip and how much or little you want to see. In a couple of weeks a bunch of us will be in Key West via Daytona for bike week. We%26#39;ll be in Key West for a couple of days then Monday morning we%26#39;ll leave Key West for Orlando. We catch Rt. 27 out of Homested which cuts through the middle of the state. Not much to see but we think it%26#39;s the quickest route with just under 400 miles.

That%26#39;s what we will be looking for - the quickest route - we%26#39;ll just want to get to our villa, not planning on seeing or doing anything on the way, that drive is purely to get us from A to B. Thanks!

  • Suggestions for accomodation for family of 7 near WDW.

    Hi,

Where are some moderate price range accomadations for a large family. I have 4 boys 9 -17 and 6 year old girl. We are trying to decide if it would be best to rent a car and rent a villa or rooms outside park or stay in park and use disney transportation.

    Thanks for all suggestions!!!

Suggestions for accomodation for family of 7 near WDW.

How soon are you hoping to go ? There are a few good deals right now for Disney Resorts, might be easier to stay on-site and more fun too :)

    www.wdwinfo.com/disneypackages.htm

Suggestions for accomodation for family of 7 near WDW.

If only doing disney it might work out cheaper to stay onsite in two rooms, especially if you get a deal. We are a family of 8 and right now the van rentals are high priced. The other perk about staying onsite is your group wants to split it can easily be done. Some can go back to the resort while the rest stay, etc.

We stay in a moderate, but a value is another good option. I would pick Pop Century if choosing a value.

We have stayed offsite before a few times in a Marriott Residence Inn (sleeps 8 in a 2 bedroom with free continental breakfast)with a rental car and prefer staying onsite.

This past October we stayed in a 4 BDRM/4 Bath house in Windsor Hills. We normally stay at one of the Disney Resorts but decided to try off property and were so glad we did. It is so nice to be able to go ';home'; at night after long days in the park. You are all in one place and not split up between two hotel rooms, you can eat some of your meals at the house instead of in the parks, you can pack light and do laundry as needed. The house was spacious and has a pool and is only minutes to the parks. We will definitely stay here again. We rented the Palm House, here is the link: http://emeraldpalmsvilla.com

We%26#39;ve stayed here a couple of times. It%26#39;s real close to the entrance to Disney property.

    lbvorlandoresort.com/Orlando-Resort-Gallery.鈥?/a>

We like the Staybridge suites LBV-they sleep 8 but it might be tight. windsor Hills is supposed to be very nice. We also like the Marriott Grande Vista which has terrific pools. We only stay on Disney property if we are traveling with small children/elderly friends because we like to have some space and a kitchen and don%26#39;t care to spend $700 a night for it-Disney villas are pricey!

Another off-site option that I like is Cypress Pointe in Lake Buena Vista. Large condos with kitchens (a big help with 5 kids if you%26#39;re trying to save on the food budget), nice pool, very close to Disney. Better with a car though. I think it%26#39;s very well priced too considering all you get.

    Jennifer

I do not know how I managed t miss this Summer, sorry!

I would rent a car probably, and then the accomodation world is you oyster. As are all parks etc as with a fam of 7 the bus tickets and shuttles and the odd taxi would soon add up.

I have three boys 14-17 and we like (and we started staying there when they were younger) Cypress Pointe resort in LBV. Very close to DTD, and the parks. Quick nip up to Universal. And walking distance to 10+restaurants at night when you are tired. And a grocery and two takeawys next door. What is not to like?

But I also highly rec the villa with pool route if you have never done it. Great fun for all, and you can relax and spend evenings in. Or have a dip mid day before returning to the parks in the evenings if it is too hot in the day. Try the ones nearest the Disney parks like Windsor Plams, Windsor Hills, Emerald Island. There are others even cheaper (these are all gated with facilities but still affordable).

Try rental sites like VRBO, Homeaway, Villas2000, Orlandorentals, etc there are more.

    HI Summer,

I went in 2007 and there were 6 of us, and we stayed in LBV resort village and spa, we had a 3 bed appartment and it was amazing, you have the luxury of an apparment but the feel of a hotel, you are only 5 minutes from disney and right next door to a shopping outlet.

The master suite is huge, then there is another double bedroom and a bedroom with two single beds, there is also a bed settee in the living room.

I have also stayed in Windsor Hills, and this was great. Personally I will be booking to go back to LBV resort and spa for next year there will be around 10-12 of us and we will get two 3 bed appartments.

    Have a wonderful holiday !

    Room Upgrades (Hard Rock Hotel)

Has anyone had any experience of free room upgrades in Orlando - we have been lucky to recieve this in the past at hotels. We are staying for our honeymoon in August %26amp; deciding whether to book a club room at hard rock hotel or to book a standard room %26amp; keep our fingers crossed for a complimentary upgrade?

    Thanks

    Room Upgrades (Hard Rock Hotel)

I would not count on it at this hotel. Hard Rock, especially in a busy season such as August, will probably be booked solid and sold out.

August is prime vacation time and folks want to stay there for the free room key express passes.

  • Good news

I just got an e-mail from dreamsunlimited travel that Disney extended their buy 4 nights get 3 free to the dates of our trip - August 14-21.

What a nice surprise! Now if only they give us the free dining we will be set.

    Good news

Good chance you won%26#39;t get both free dining and the ';buy 4/get 3 free'; offer simultaneously.

    disney villages

Hi, We%26#39;re about to travel to Orlando next week. We are renting a hotel outside of the Disney Resort/complex, and don%26#39;t plan to visit the Disney Parks. However, we%26#39;re wondering if we can go to the restaurants within Disney%26#39;s Boardwalk, Celebration, Downtown Disney, or maybe even one of the resorts. When I browse the Disney site, it looks like those are only open to Disney guests. Is that true? Are those open to the public?

    Thanks!

    disney villages

the restaurants are opening to the public

    disney villages

No, all of the Dinsey restaurants and resorts are open to the public for visiting and eating. In fact, they have many ';outside'; guests visiting them all the time.

What you will need to do is call DIsney and make a reservation for the restuarants where you want to eat, if on Disney property or at one of their resorts. The ';table service'; restaurants stay so busy, reservations are almost a must-have.

    Call (407) WDW-DINE for reservations.

  • Manta Opening Day Announced

    Hi everyone,

If you are like me, you have been eagerly anticipating the opening of this roller coaster ever since it was announced last year it would be opening. SeaWorld has now announced the opening date of May 22! This page explains a little more about the project: http://www.examiner.com/x-3067-Orlando-Family-Travel-Examiner~y2009m2d8-SeaWorld-announces-opening-day-for-Manta

Personally, I think it%26#39;s about time that Central Florida have a flying coaster. Also, it will be nice to have a queue line that is actually air conditioning and not just shaded!

I%26#39;m not looking forward to the lines those first few weeks, but hopefully there will still be some lulls where riding won%26#39;t take too terribly long.

There have been a lot of complaints on here about the new WDW site and how user unfriendly it is, maybe this is one of the %26#39;glitches%26#39;. I have previously ordered the pack off this site with no problems (I always put ROI in as my postcode). • Do we need a rest during the day or stick it out at WDW?

Hi we are 8 adults staying at the POR in WDW.

Are we better to come back to POR for a rest during the day from the theme parks and head back in? After going bleary eyed at my computer reading, reading and more reading, I am wondering if that idea will work given the geographics and grand scale of WDW. ie by the time we do the transport shuffle, get back to POR, walk to our room - does it give us much time to rest before heading back in? We%26#39;ll be using Disney transport.

Or are we better to sleep in, leave later and just pace ourselves for the day and evening without the resort break? We will be staying 7 nights but will only have 4 full days to enjoy the parks.

We%26#39;re also using the DDP which is another reason I need to work this out. Can any seasoned WDW fans offer any advice?

Do we need a rest during the day or stick it out at WDW?

Personally i suggest you get to the parks as early as possible and you will get on all the big rides almost straight away. We was then done with those pretty early in the day giving time if wanted to head back to the hotel pool or something then u could return back later to watch the fireworks and browse the shops. U save soooo much time gettin there early, hours off your day saved by not doing the huge queues. Good luck

Do we need a rest during the day or stick it out at WDW?

It depends on how busy the parks are, but I can guarantee you that you will spend far more time in line, and less time on rides if you go later.

You other option is to go early, come aback at 4 after having done everything, then swim, shower dress for dinner at Epcot, DTD or a resort and then have evening fun.

If you are only spending 4 total days in parks you probably wont get too burnt out, its all adults and no kids right. If you really want to see as much of the parks as you can on the trip then staying the whole day will help with that. If yout more interested in relaxing (lazing by the pool, getting extra sleep etc) then go back to the resort but you will lose a lot of time going back and forth.

There are plenty of ways for an adults only group to relax within or near the parks. At MK you can hop on the train and go around a couple times, take a boat ride to Fort Wilderness and back, ride the ';people mover'; around a few times, ride the monorail around the resort loop, or just sit and people watch a while. At EP or DS take the boat through the whole Epcot resorts/boardwalk area and back. AK has some nice shady, quiet spots to just sit and relax for a few minutes.

If you are ones that enjoy staying out late and want to do EMH, you could pick a park with evening EMH and take a break in the middle of that day, show up at park opening to get in some of the busier rides, leave for a few hours in the afternoon, and then come back for the evening EMH.

    Hi jane56

When other forum user put up a op like yours, they are always told get to the park early.

WHOA!!!! are%26#39;nt we on holiday, we are here to chill. Not to be up all night worrying, about getting to the parks at the crack of dawn.

You will have to line up sometime in the day, unless you are going to sprint from ride to ride.

Ok if you go early you might get on the big rides quicker, if everyone who has been told go early to the parks. The parks are going to be full as soon as the gates open, my advice is take your time.

You have gone on holiday to relax, take in the sights.Do you need to do every ride in one day?

I never every rush when on holiday, we never hire a car in Florida. We use the public transport, you miss a bus so what. There will be another at sometime, there is a line for the ride. You will get on it at sometime, my way of thinking is just relax on holiday.

You have got 50 more weeks to rush around in the rat race.

I never advise to ';sleep in'; when going to Disney as we are always at the parks for rope drop in order to get the most rides/attractions in before the real mass of crowds arrive.

It%26#39;s a matter of personal choice though.

What time of year are you visiting?

If it%26#39;s going to be unmercifully hot and the parks very crowded, I%26#39;d get up early, go to the parks for opening, stay till noon or 1:00, then head back to the resort for a rest during the hottest part of the day.

That evening, you can go back after it cools off and some of the crowds, who stuck around all day, have left.

As for the DDP, you can usually get better seatings for T.S. at lunch, but you don%26#39;t get as much food. If you like your ';big meal'; at dinner time, you may have a harder time getting ressies.

Personaly, I like to be at the park when it opens and stay till it closes. No breaks for us, even with kiddos. We enjoy the parks at a leisurely pace taking time to sit and take in the sites as we go. I really never understood the go back and rest theory :)

The only park you really need to go early for is Animal Kingdom if you want to do the safari and see the animals, as it gets hot the animals tend to hide in the trees etc so you dont see as many as you do if you go early in the morning when it is nice and cool.

Otherwise hey your all adults, get up when you want have a swim, and head on when ready, you can stay as late as you want as you wont be restricted by having to get back for tired kids,

Honestly you will be fine just have fun, it is exhausting but I bet you find you wont want to go back to the hotel to rest once in a park.

    enjoy !';

    Salford,

most british holiday makers have 2 weeks in orlando, some even three.

When someone has only 4 days, lying in is an expensive waste of time IMHO. But, if you have over a week, I always advise taking things easy.

I had 48 hours in Sanfrancisco a few years back and got tons of things done/seen in that short period. The kids had a blast.

As i said its a personal thing and we are all just giving our opinions.Personally I would not want to spend hours in queues when those hours could be spent relaxing or taking in the sights.

Having arrived at all the parks early on our last holiday i can assure you that you do save a huge amount of time... and no we did not run from ride to ride lol, there was no need. You will be surprised how quickly all the popular rides can be done when there is not many people about!!

I have to agree with the above post i would not want to lie in bed when in Orlando anyway too excited lol.

Just go with what suits you and enjoy!!

I really think it is a matter of personal preference. With a big group, different people may prefer different things. The last time we went, several years ago, we did four parks in four days. We were exhausted and I needed a vacation after my vacation. We stayed off-site and just didn%26#39;t want to take the time to leave the parks, nap, and bother with parking and all when we returned. So we just went and stuck it out as long as we could. I swore I would not do that again. This time when we go (June) we are staying on site so we can take the bus back for a nap or swim and return in the evening. I just prefer getting up early going to all the big rides while there are shorter lines and then taking a rest. After I nap I am way happier and will enjoy going back for dinner and shows, etc. We only managed to stick it out to closing once the last time and I am looking forward to my new plan which will allow me to take it easier. Also, since we got the Buy 4/get 3 deal, I can choose to go or not go to a park on any give day and still have plenty of time. Really, though it is a matter of what you think you would want to do. I know you will have a great time regardless!

    Re: digital camera stores

    hi,

I am about to visit the Orlando area. Are digital SLR cameras notably cheaper in Orlando than in the UK, and could you recommend any good stores?

    Thanks,

    Mark

    Re: digital camera stores

The first and foremost piece of advice I can offer is that there are lots of little camera stores with what one might call questionable ethics. Stay well away.

There is a chain - www.ritzcamera.com - with several branches.

There are Best Buy and Circuit City (similar to UK Comet/Curry%26#39;s but bigger).

And the local real specialist - Colonial Photo and Hobby - http://www.cphfun.com

As for cheaper...probably not, or not by much. Think about things like warranty, multivoltage charger, import taxes and so on when you consider.

    Re: digital camera stores

I%26#39;m not 100% sure, but I remember reading that Circuit City had gone into receivership.

The lower exchange rate means that it is more difficult nowadays to find a genuine bargain. Plus, you also have warranty issues to take into account.

Personally, I would do some checking on web sites both here and there to see what the difference is and make a decision based on that. You can often get pretty good deals on Amazon UK and also pixmania.

Circuit City has gone into liquidation as of 16th January

    link to web site www.circuitcity.com

    Gismo

Yes, the Circuit City stores are all closing forever.

You can get a few models at either Wal-Mart or Target, but I%26#39;d probably go to Best Buy myself for the biggest selection.

Another reputable camera store is Ritz/Wolfe, but steer clear of those camera stores in the strip malls in the tourist areas. They are rip-offs.

First of all, price what you want here at Amazon/Tesco etc and see what it costs. Multiply that by the exchange rate, and add 7% for tax. This is the price you need to beat.

Then when you are there, look at BestBuy/Target, even Walamrt and see what they have and if it is any cheaper. I found electronics were still a better buy there when the exchange rate was near $1.70/1, but not so much now.

If when you have found on the US websites that there isn%26#39;t much difference, check the Dixon%26#39;s Duty free in the airport on your way over. That can be the best deal when exchange rates are bad.

    Keys Vacation Help for April

My husband and I are in dire need of getting out of Philadelphia for a few days so we booked a flight to Miami following out 40th %26amp; 30th b-days. We arrive on Wednesday and are planning to rent a car and drive to Key West, but would like to spend one night in another area. Can anyone suggest a good location? This will be Wednesday or Sunday night. Also, I%26#39;m looking at the Popular House for 3 nights in KW - please let me know if this is a horrible idea (it looked pretty cute)

    Thanks!

    Keys Vacation Help for April

Take a look at either Islamorada or Marathon for the extra night. If you can find a room, book it asap. Busy time of year here.

I don%26#39;t know anything about Popular House, but I%26#39;m sure a KWester will be able to help out with that.

    Keys Vacation Help for April

You might want to stay within driving distance of the Everglades National Park. I know March is alligator mating season %26amp; I think it is still mating season at the start of April. You see HUNDREDS - maybe THOUSANDS of gators %26amp; it is quite spectacular!

That means staying one night in either Key Largo or Islamorada. I would do that on the day/night before I was flying home, so it isn%26#39;t such a long drive to the airport.

  • Any suggestions for last table service on last night at WDW?

Hello all- wanted to get some opinions for our last table service on our last evening at WDW. We have not planned anything that day so I am up for suggestions! here goes:

5/2 arrive at the Polynesian resort and head straight to MK for dinner at Liberty tree tavern (sadley no more character dining :(

5/3 AK early dinner at Tusker house then head straight to HS for Fanstasmic (no Fanstasmic dinner shows left) :(

5/4 Epcot dinner at Coral Reef (want to dine with the fishes LOL)

5/5 Waterparks and DTD-we will do QS dining this day either earl of sandwich or wolfgangs express

5/6 MK dinner at Cinderellas Royal Table

5/7 HS dinner at Sci Fi Dine in

5/8 (Friday) Have no set plans!

So any suggestions on Friday nights dinner? Any place you think is a must go?

I really am thankful to all that have helped me with various responses and suggestions! I am so excited for my trip I can hardly stand it. I think I am officially driving my Husband and my two daughters crazy! LOL!!!!!

Any suggestions for last table service on last night at WDW?

Are you planning on going to the parks the last day?

If so I would do either Le Cellier in EPcot

    or Brown Derby in MGM....

Also perfect way to end the trip would be California Grill and watch wishes

If you are not planning on going to parks..I would pick either Boma or Jiko in Animal Kingdom or if you want a fun dinner..head over to Whispering Canyon Cafe in wilderness Lodge.

Don%26#39;t stress over no fantasmic dinners. I think this is the biggest rip off. You pay more bucks and your seat is not great.

I have never not gotten a seat at fantasmic even when I went 15 minutes ahead of time. Tons of room there so don%26#39;t worry. You are going at a slower time of year and will not have a problem getting center seats

Any suggestions for last table service on last night at WDW?

Narcoossee%26#39;s, Les Chef de France, Le Cellier, Bistro de Paris, Citricos, Flying Fish Cafe, Brown Derby, and Fulton%26#39;s are all family favorites. So many choices, so little time! You will just have to make another trip!

    Enjoy!

Have you thought of dinner at your resort? Ohana or Kona?

    If not what about Boma?

Oh and I too drive my family crazy but now that we are down to 11 days, it has kicked in with them too. They are equally as excited and are getting close to my craziness.

    thank you to you both!

I will start looking up the menus.

I have not really decided yet what we are going to do on that last day. I think my husband and I will discuss with the kids on thursday night what they would like to do again. (or what they felt the may have missed if anything) We can always make sure we leave early enough from where ever we are to get to dinner.

    Hi Macs,

We did Kona and Ohanas when we came to WDW for the first time in 07.

We will be having a few breakfasts in Kona this trip.

We enjoyed Ohanas but really feel like we want to experience something different.

When we went the first time I didnt make any dining reservations except Ohanas.

We were lucky that we managed to get into Kona%26#39;s one night and then we got really lucky and got a character meal at Liberty tree tavern.

This time I made sure to pay attention and get ADR.

There is so much we did not do the first time.

We didnt go to DTD at all and missed the waterparks so we are doing that this time. I added a night onto this trip so we can have a little more time to relax.

I am excited to see fantasmic and illuminations as well. (missed that the first time too! LOl)

I know you cant do it all in a week, but the nice thing is since we have allready been there we may not do all the rides. Just the ones we really liked so we can do the other things.

Like maybe a live show, Lion king or Beauty and the beast and Nemo!

See here I go ago again with the excitement.

I guess its just the idea that we get to spend time together as a family having so much fun that is so appealing!

    have a wonderul trip Macs!

I will be looking forward to a trip report! ;)

It sounds like you%26#39;re on the Dining Plan? So you%26#39;d have 1 TS credit left, right? That would knock out a dinner show like Hoop de Doo or a Signature Restaurant which would cost 2 credits each.

If you have young ones and don%26#39;t want to burn a park ticket Whispering Canyon at the Wilderness Lodge might be fun. It%26#39;s a BBQ type place (they have other stuff) with lots of fun for the young and young and heart. Kind of like a western themed 50s Prime Time. Could be fun.

Your girls, however, might enjoy the buffet at Park Faire at the Grand Floridian. It would be a Cindy repeat though.

    Jennifer

I am staying at the Poly and made reservations at Ohana, we%26#39;ve been before. I made it for 9:30 so we can see the fireworks as we dine!!! Try that or maybe Kona Cafe or maybe California grill.

Now I remember you saying you already ate at Kona and Ohana.

Good idea to wait until then to decide what to repeat.

Jan. 25-30 escape to sun / What we did

Between the piles of snow and single-digit temperatures plus $178 round trip flights on Continental and $99/nt January Special rate at Silver Sands condo, my husband and I were inspired to end January with five days on Longboat Key. I predicted that we 60-somethings might be content with walks on the beach and driving around in a convertible...and most of the time that was exactly what we wanted to do. Here%26#39;s my final section of trip report on what we did (when we chose not to do the nothing-at-all stuff like walking the beach, reading on the beach and watching the sun sink into the Gulf...all of which, of course, is the very best of all!)

It had been four years since we last visited Sarasota. Some of the great TA suggestions I%26#39;d gathered, like cbchrc%26#39;s to visit Selby, Ringling Museum and Ca d%26#39;Zan, we%26#39;d done before. Actually I was intrigued by the Ringling%26#39;s special exhibition of 100 kimono created in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Japan, but once exposed to Sarasota%26#39;s glorious January sunshine, I was loathe to devote an hour or more to any such indoor pursuit.

    MONDAY

Our condo at Silver Sands on Longboat was a short drive to COQUINA BEACH, located on the south end of Anna Maria Island. Other 60-somethings like us were walking the beach or the trail next to it. A boat launch, bayside, is across the street from the beach as well as Coquina BayWalk at Leffis Key where footpaths and boardwalks lead visitors around restored tidal lagoons and mangrove shoreline. As we watched a fisherman out on a sandbar, a dolphin came near to do some fishing of his own. Such a relaxing, low-key setting...really magical to this Midwesterner. The scene at St. ARMAND%26#39;S CIRCLE is anything but serene, and we%26#39;d spent time there on both previous Sarasota vacations. Still that was enjoyable, too, for a while, and my husband bought some sandals.

    TUESDAY

After breakfast at Harry%26#39;s we rented bikes and explored JOAN DURANTE PARK (another of cbchrc%26#39;s tips) before heading to Sarasota%26#39;s BAYFRONT PARK and MARINA. 26-foot-tall statues “Unconditional Surrender,” an over-sized depiction of a sailor embracing a nurse at the end of World War II and first time I%26#39;ve ever watched anyone hand feed a half-dozen pelicans! We walked (further than my husband had predicted) to the rather deserted TOWLES COURT ARTS DISTRICT for a bit of browsing its galleries following lunch. That evening we went with relatives to hear Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis at the VAN WEZEL -- a memorable concert in an attractive venue.

    WEDNESDAY

MYAKKA STATE PARK was on my husband%26#39;s list, and he was pleased to catch sight of a bald eagle and osprey plus various herons, egrets and cranes. We ventured up into the treetop canopy walk and took the narrated excursion on Gator Gal, one of the world%26#39;s largest airboats.

Throughout our stay we spent time with relatives also...so nice to have family located in such desirable vacation spots!

Jan. 25-30 escape to sun / What we did

    thanks for your report!

  • Birthday Surprise Ideas for my Girlfriend?!!!!

My girlfriend and I will be flying to Ft Myers then motorcycling down to the Keys 2/26-3/1 and it is her birthday while we are down there. Any ideas?!!!! I was looking at a dinner cruise or sunset sail... Maybe the Fort Jefferson seaplane but that looks a bit spendy. We already have a massage booked so thats one idea down.

I%26#39;m military so we%26#39;re staying at Truman Annex for fairly cheap...$50/night!!! Maybe we can splurge a bit! Any ideas would be greately appreciated. Thanks and hopefully it warms up a bit between now and then! It%26#39;s 50 degrees in Wisconsin so I hope its even better down there!!!

Birthday Surprise Ideas for my Girlfriend?!!!!

Maybe have dinner at Latitudes on Sunset Key. You can have dinner right on the beach.

Birthday Surprise Ideas for my Girlfriend?!!!!

You want REALLY fine dining - try Little Palm Island. It%26#39;ll be 3 bills but really good and fancy.

Islescapes is a dinner boat that goes out with no more than 6 people on it. GREAT food.

For the massage, I%26#39;d suggest Caribbean Spa at the Pier House.

I think the seaplane to Fort Jefferson is shut down. Not sure, but I think so.

First you need one of those gel pads for the pillion.

Then, since you have four full days in Key West, take a look at one of the snorkel / kayak trips. You get breakfast, a snorkel stop, a great lunch, then a kayak paddle around a mangrove island. And finally a casual sail back to Key West.

Then generally board at 9:30 and get back 4:00 - 4:30, just in time for happy hours.

    There%26#39;s the Danger Charters...

    http://www.dangercharters.com/snorkel.htm

    Or the Sebago island T%26#39;Ing...

    http://www.keywestsebago.com/islandting.php

All you need are towels, a camera, and a cap.

    Pjk

If you want a truley memorable time go to Little Palm Island. You get on a beautiful antique wooden boat at MM 28.5. You go out to the island and have a great dinner on the beach facing the sunset.

I agree with Little Palm Island. There is nothing like it. The dinner cruise would also be a nice idea. Book the Coma Massage for her at the Pier House. She will love it!

Hopefully won%26#39;t need a gelpad...we%26#39;ll be on a harley roadking and she%26#39;s pretty tough! Unfortunately we won%26#39;t quite have 4 full days...we%26#39;ll get in sometime Thursday night the 26th then leave Sunday morning March 1st (February is a short one!) So we%26#39;ll have all day Friday and Saturday at least!

Is the weather looking like it%26#39;s going to warm up? The snorkel idea is great and I%26#39;d really like to do that but don%26#39;t want the lady to be freezing! She%26#39;s actually from an island in Wisconsin....yes you read that right Wisconsin has an island...Washington Island, WI. It%26#39;s a few miles out in Lake Michigan, you take a ferry to get there! So i%26#39;m sure she%26#39;ll be used to the cold water!

Thanks for your help with these ideas!!!!

Other options - if you are leaning TRULY memorable and slightly off the beaten path....

Look up No Wake Charters. They go out from behind Hogfish and you can spend the entire day just the two of you on a 31%26#39; sailboat. They sail out looking for dolphins and out to the coral reef where you can do some nice snorkeling. Plus, depending on you and your gf%26#39;s comfort level, you have the option of doing it in the buff - no tan lines! We%26#39;re going out with them next week to celebrate the Mrs%26#39; 40th b-day.

The other option - again, we%26#39;re a slightly less conservative people - is to contact Senses at Play and have a sensual, erotic photo shoot of you both. It lasts for 3-4 hours, and the finished product on DVD set to music is absolutely spectacular! We%26#39;ve shown it to a select few friends, and their reaction was absolute amazement. It was one of the top 5 days of our 12 year marriage! We%26#39;re planning a 2nd shoot this visit as well. We were going to wait until we ride our Heritage down next April and use it in the shoot, but we may have an awesome Fat Boy loaned to us.

Remember - this is Key West. Throw convention out the window. It%26#39;s 8 sq. miles of magic.

Wow....We%26#39;ve got some good, naughty, and nice ideas coming in here ;) I love em%26#39;! Probaby trying to keep the ';surprise'; cost down under 300 bucks and don%26#39;t want to use up an entire day so it%26#39;s looking like a sunset sail or the little torch resort. Would they mind if we dined in the nude? HA! Is the food and experience really worth it at Little Torch? By the looks of the menu we%26#39;re looking around 200ish for dinner and drinks? How long would it take to ride there from KW? Thanks again!

It takes about 40 min. to get to Little Tourch Key, the boat leaves at MM 28.5.

Two gel pads for a Harley!

One of the nights you%26#39;ve got to walk up and down Duval and just look at all of the, basically, HDs parked along the curbs.

For snorkling when you are there, there are so many trips that you can leave this in case you get a really nice day, then book an afternoon snorkel or an afternoon snorkel / sunset sail. If you don%26#39;t geet a really good day, save it for the next trip.

    Universal's Mardi Gras

From an article in the Orlando Sentinel:

    --

Universal Studios%26#39; Mardi Gras celebration begins its 11-week run Saturday with an expanded schedule, a literary theme for the parade and -- eventually -- a new stage for the headlining musical acts.

    ..

Two non-Saturday dates were added to this year%26#39;s lineup: Sunday, Feb. 15, with the Village People, and Friday, March 27, with Boys Like Girls.

Established acts are counterbalanced with contemporary artists, such as Ne-Yo and Kelly Clarkson.

The concerts immediately follow the heaving-bead-heavy parade, which this year has a literary theme titled ';Stories.'; Think genres, not Harry Potter.

The floats are constructed at Universal Orlando in partnership with New Orleans designers Kern Studios.

The parade route will be the same as in previous years, including a stretch along the site of Universal%26#39;s under-construction permanent stage. That area, where Mardi Gras concerts took place in the past, is being rehabbed and won%26#39;t be ready for this Saturday%26#39;s performance by KC and the Sunshine Band. Universal has set up a temporary stage near Mel%26#39;s Drive-In restaurant.

The upcoming stage, still hidden behind a wall, features archways that reflect the architecture near the entrance of the theme park. Timon anticipates positive reactions after the facility%26#39;s debut, expected to be in the early part of this Mardi Gras season.

When: Saturdays through April 18, plus Feb. 15 and March 27.

    Beach chair rentals?

Going to FLL next week for 7 days, Does anyone know if chairs and or umbrellas are available for daily rentals on public beaches---and if so, what are the rental rates?

    Beach chair rentals?

I don%26#39;t know the rate but yes, thereis one company that has the concession awarded by thecity operataing all up and down the beach. Whatever the rate though, you would likely be far better off going to the CVS drugs at Beach Place and purchasing your chairs, umbrellas etc , then leaving them behind at your accomodation when finished. The daily rental rate x 7 would be far higher than the chair%26#39;s purchase price .

    Disney Deluxe Plan

The disney deluxe consists of 3 meals a day. We are staying for 10 nights with this plan. Would this mean we have 30 meals in total? OR as it is 11 days that we would be there, would it mean we have 33 meals in total?

    I hope this makes sense!!

    Disney Deluxe Plan

How many nights is your stay for?

That%26#39;s how many days worth of meal credits you get.

So, if you are lodging for 10 nights, you get 30 credits. If you are lodging for 11 nights, you get 33 credits.

    Make sense?

    Disney Deluxe Plan

    That great thanks very much.

OliM: Three seated meals a day, is a lot of dining. Think of your deluxe plan as an invitation to dine, at Disney%26#39;s finest restaurants. You can use your dining credits, any way you choose. We book 2 credit meals; Narcoossee%26#39;s, Cinderella%26#39;s Castle, Brown Derby, Flying Fish, Hoop Dee Doo dinner show, etc., and take advantage of room service (which includes gratuities). We use the snack credits for muffins, juice, etc. in the mornings.

You will love the flexibility, of the deluxe plan! Enjoy!

  • Is 12 nights enough for first trip?

We are pricing up flights to go to Orlando last 2 weeks of august with our children aged 11 and 5. We have played around with dates etc. and if you go for 12 night the flights work out about 拢500 cheaper in total. We have also found a lovely villa which is available for these dates. My question is it is worth paying an extra 拢500 and going for another couple of nights, or do you think 12 nights will be enough with children of that age? (We have been on abroad many times in the past but only ever done one week with the kids!)

Is 12 nights enough for first trip?

When I was that age, 12 nights or 14, I would have been thrilled to go to Disney either way. And my parents wouldn%26#39;t let me know there was an option to begin with.

Is 12 nights enough for first trip?

12 nights will be enough. Don%26#39;t forget you will be flying back overnight so that will add another day onto your holiday!

You will probably be shattered after that time. Save the 拢500 for the next visit!

We took our 3 boys from the age of about 3 (youngest) right through till now (28 youngest now) and probably going again this September - they cannot get enough of Florida. We now also take their girl friends now.

WOW!! I think that is more than enough. As mentioned above you will need time to rest after your long flights. You will most certainly be able to see and do a lot. Have you thought about a trip over the the Fla. beaches? Or, will you do Disney the entire time?

12 nights is a hugh amount of time will you be just staying in orlando. 12 nights is PLENTY if money is an issue then investigate a little further into your trip. remember park tickets are extramly pricey and shows at night time etc can be 70-90dollars a person. the price of food etc .. in the parks is extorionate. i think you will have had enough of the parks after about 7 days. also my brother his wife and there three kids were there for two weeks and had had enough of parks for the rest of there lives in that time. consider a couple of days at the beach . clearwater and fort myers are both great family spots. i was in both places at christmass time.

I also agree that there is a risk of burnout if you spend more than the 12 days. And build in some downtime!!! (Swimming, napping, just lying around with a nice book. )

12 nights will be fine, my advise would be dont try to do everything on this visit, stick to 4 disney parks, and sea world, and then relax and enjoy it. leave Universal until kids are older.

I think there is something for everyone in universal ! particularly the 11 year old. both kids would go mad for all the simpsons stuff thats there!

Still with twelve days there is plenty of time to not miss anything!

Hi jamiejay, and welcome to the forum.

12 days is good for your FIRST trip, but you will get hooked on florida just as we all are on here. We took our kids every year for years and we all had a fabulous time. They are now grown up but occasionally still like to come with us with their other half, and yes, hubby and I still go back every year. Not so much to the theme parks now (although we did do Epcot last year), but florida has so much more to offer once you%26#39;ve had your fill of the parks and you feel confident to spread your wings...maybe the second or third trip!!!!

Its a good idea for another visit to do disney for a week, then have a week at the gulf coast beaches, relaxing in the warm waters and white sands.

Hope the villa you%26#39;ve chosen is not too far away from disney as the place is vast and you have lots of ground to cover each day so just take that into account.

Don%26#39;t forget it will be hot and humid in august with short thunderstorms nearly every afternoon. However, most Brits don%26#39;t seem to mind that as its convenient with our big school holiday (and it does cool you off a bit) lol.

Any questions you have, however large or small, post them on here and someone will always have an answer for you.

Enjoy the forum and good luck with your planning.

I agree 12 nights will be good save the 拢500 -you can spend it there or put it to your next trip,

We did 14 nights when we first went but now our min stay is around 3 weeks.

My children are 11 and 5 and they love it -

    Chris

12 Nights is great, for a first trip. Plenty of time to see everything and have time to relax, swim, shop, dine, etc. Happy planning!

St. Pete Beach April 24-May 1

My wife and I are making our first visit to St. Pete Beach for a week. I am staying in a condo on the beach. What should we see and looking for places to eat, entertainment, etc. We love to dance and see what sights there are in the area. Hope you can assist.

    Thanks!!

St. Pete Beach April 24-May 1

    Hi, mcdonapa,

A few things you definitely should see are the sunset from the beach (! - and it%26#39;s free!), some type of boat ride (maybe a dolphin watch or a fishing trip), and Fort De Soto State Park, which has one of the top rated beaches in the country, as well as a wealth of recreational options, like kayaking, biking, fishing, etc.

A visit to downtown St Pete is fun, too. The Pier is a dining and entertainment complex with a great view of Tampa Bay and lots of things to do. There are lots of museums, too. The Dali Museum is amazing, even if you don%26#39;t usually like museums!

Places to eat - well, for local flavor, try Dockside Dave%26#39;s for grouper sandwiches, Bella Havana for Cuban, and Ted Peters%26#39; Smoked Fish. Some other favorite casual places are Sea Critters, the Wharf, Agave for Mexican, Sloppy Pelican, Philthy Phil%26#39;s, and Sea Hags. Finer dining is great at Snapper%26#39;s or Madfish.

Several of the local beach bars have live music for dancing. Jimmy B%26#39;s, behind the Beachcomber, has live music daily from mid-afternoon til late evening. The Undertow has live reggae occasionally, and canned dance music at other times (the crowd here tends to be mostly 20-somethings - don%26#39;t know how old you are, but just letting you know). Other places with live music and dancing are Blue Parrott, Philthy Phil%26#39;s, Drunken Clam, and the Swigwam. (I%26#39;m probably forgetting some!) But our very fave place for dancing is Wednesday night at Woody%26#39;s Waterfront. It%26#39;s Motown night, and everyone is Always having fun!

All of these places are very flip-flop casual! No dress-up dance clubs in SPB. For those, you would need to go to downtown St Pete, Clearwater or Tampa.

You have picked a nice time to come! The weather is generally perfect then!

More specific questions, just ask! It%26#39;s hard to help while being so general.

St. Pete Beach April 24-May 1

Thanks for the info. We are in our 40%26#39;s and like to get out and have a good time. Boat trips-any recommendations? We will for sure hit the Motown night and head to a Rays Baseball game and Busch Gardens as well. Any other ideas, let me know. We are up for just about anything fun.

    Hi,again,

My favorite boat trip is the Dolphin Racer. It is a speed boat that circles the island, passing through Boca Ciega Bay and cruising along the beach. The dolphins really like to play in the wake behind the boat - they ';surf'; along behind. Sit in the back for the best view.

A sunset sail is nice, too, but, really, it looks exactly the same as from the beach! And, speaking of boat rides, save yourselves some money and don%26#39;t be tempted by the Starlight Princess dinner cruise, unless you really enjoy the mass-produced food and something-for-everyone music of your average wedding reception. Think luke-warm food and the hokey-pokey!)

And Rays tix will be going on sale the week of Feb 23!

You will Love Motown night - the group who performs are fabulous! And Busch Gardens is a blast, especially if you like roller coasters. But even if you don%26#39;t, the new Jungala viewing area is awesome. Tigers and orangutans, up close.

Is there a website for the dolphin racer? Where should we go for a good meal around the stadium before the Rays game? Appreciate the info thus far. We are staying in a condo at 66th and Sunset Way. Are we close to the Motown night and other places you mentioned? Thanks

    Hi,

Website is dolphinracer.com. Also ,when you arrive look around at businesses for the free Guide to Tampa Bay. It always has coupons.

For food near the Trop, the popular, busy pre-game spot is Ferg%26#39;s Sports Bar. Everyone there is on their way to the game. Very good, typical bar food. Another option, for a nicer meal, but still not too fancy, is Savannah%26#39;s. Excellent Southern-style food.

You will be Very close to Woody%26#39;s, the Motown place - it is also on Sunset Way, which is a pretty short road. Other walkable places are Philthy Phil%26#39;s, Beverly%26#39;s, Frog Pond and Sloppy Pelican. But, really, SPB is not that big, so you won%26#39;t be really far from anything!

    Adr`s

I know that people do have problems booking the ADR they want because of the chosen restaurant being fully booked and I know that people have been advised on here to keep trying in case a cancellation is made. An additional tip would be to telephone 45 days before your trip as this is the timescale for people to pay their outstanding balance to Disney and often people either change their dates or cancel their trip. This is when cancellations are made.

    It is worth trying.

    Adr`s

The only flaw in this theory may be that they cancel their trip, but forget to cancel their dining reservations unless a credit card deposit was required.

Most folks don%26#39;t bother with dining cancellations if no deposit was taken, or they simply forget about it.

    Adr`s

Prospect1 - you took the words right out of my mouth!! Looks like we%26#39;ve both been reading the same article.

Hopefully I wont need to do that. Still got ages to go yet and can%26#39;t get everyone to agree on where they want to go!!

    L

    xx

    Kat

I realise that not everyone cancels their ADR`s but if a few do then it is worth people checking.IMO

    Dining vs no dining

Ok so here%26#39;s the situation. We are planning a disney trip in August. We are planning on staying at the Ft. wilderness cabins. Any thoughts on that property would be appreciated. Anyway, we looked into the dining program and are just a bit hesitant. It would be an extra $1100 for my family. With times being tough I don%26#39;t know we can pull it off. I figure we can cook out at the resort and eat quick and cheap. The question I have is can we add it on later if we don%26#39;t put it on our reservation when we book and is it really worth it? Thanks so much.

    Dining vs no dining

Read the back of your invoice it says the possible dates in which you need to change your reservation without a reservation change fee. Sorry I do not have mine with me right now to check.

I will say we went last April for 4 nights and did not do the dining plan and it cost us about the same as if we had the basic plan and we ate mostly counter service. That being said we are now trying the dining plan this next trip.

The other advantage is paying for it in advance 45 days prior.

If you have gone on other trips and do not mind cooking, maybe it will be easy to use the kitchen you will have. I have booked suites with kitchens and never used more then the microwave to heat up leftovers.

    Dining vs no dining

I agree. I always have the best intentions to cook and save money but I never do. But with 4 kids and one being a 16 yr old boy. It may be cheaper to do pizza some nights, hamburgers on the grill another. I don%26#39;t know. I just know that we are trying to make this dream of going this year a reality and we have very little funds to do so. I just was hoping that if we didn%26#39;t add it now but if for some reason came into some extra money we could add it later.

    Hi smyersi,

which plan did you go for?

    The Quick service

or the regular plan with 1 table service 1 quick service and 1 snack?

How long are you going for?

It always seems to me I spend more money that I anticipated. I can see you get away with cooking breakfasts in the cabin to start out the day but once you are at the parks would it work?

Do you see yourself going back to the cabin each night to cook? (or afternoon)

Did you sign on for the buy 4 get three free deal? (assuming you stay for 7 nights)

    Sorry so many questions.

Disney is expensive no matter what but, it is worth it! Hope you have a wonderul time no matter what you decide to do.

We always do a big breakfast in before going to the parks. It%26#39;s nice to eat in for breakfast. I prefer that to going out. And then, I usually make 10 sandwiches or so and bring cheese cracker / peanut butter cracker snacks to whatever Disney park I go to. What this does for us is allow us to have light lunch or have people who are in our group who are hungry get a snack while we%26#39;re in line for one of the rides. They allow you to bring food to the parks. Then we%26#39;ll usually go for a Disney meal at the theme park around 4 p.m. or so -- typically not an expensive place (a cafeteria / counter service place, etc.) That will take care of us for the evening -- possibily even till park closing (though we will have to have something like a Mickey Bar, pop corn, soft drinks, etc.). Then when we go back to our condo we%26#39;ll have some food -- fruit, ham, pasta, and salad. Believe me, we spend way less than a meal plan, eat healthier, and don%26#39;t gain weight.

I talked to Disney Dining this morning. You can add the dining plan up to 72 hours before your check-in date.

We used to camp at Ft. Wilderness every year back when our kids were young. It%26#39;s a great place for a family. There was no dining plan back then and I did quite a bit of meals in the camper. Breakfast and either lunch or dinner every day. We even managed a few barbeques. It%26#39;s fun to eat out but you don%26#39;t have to to have fun.

    Jennifer

Just a suggestion, have a light breakfast before you go, cereal, fruit, doughnuts, whatever you like, then snack until lunch, split an entree from the counter service, there is plenty of food for two in those, snack in the afternoons on the wonderfully decadent Disney snacks, pineapple whip, frozen chocolate covered bananas, funnel cakes, whatever you fancy, then do either another counter service meal, splitting it of course or try and get a sit down supper in the park a day or two, or eat back at the resort, or stop and pick up a pizza or ???? Keeping your meals light, allows you to snack without overeating. You may take some snacks into the park with you if your want to do that to save even more. We find that with all there is to do at Disney, we don%26#39;t want to spend a lot of time sitting down, eating large meals and gaining weight. And we don%26#39;t want to miss out on the yummy snacks on vacation, so, we never do the meal plan. Good luck on whichever way you go, and post back to let us know which you did, and how it worked out for you.

Thanks for all the great replies. Hoosier2 that%26#39;s what my husband is saying He%26#39;s saying $1100 is great if we want to make this an eating trip, then that%26#39;s a good deal. However, like you said if you do eggs and toast or cereal in the cabin. Bring sandwiches and snacks into the park and just have counter service for dinner. We usually only do once character meal on our trip anyway. Thanks for all the suggestions.

This is a big decision, esp if you%26#39;re on a budget like most people. I did the dining plan this year, first time. I am anxious to try it out. I find that I would probably spend more out of pocket if we just grabbed a snack here/there. I feel like I would nickel and dime myself. I like the idea of not having to carry about tons of cash and know it%26#39;s all paid for already. If you ate a big breakfast (as suggested) you could get away with only 2 meals but your 16 yr old may need several snacks during the day. I did the basic dining. Snacks are covererd as well as one table service meal and one counter meal. I guess it%26#39;s really your choice as to what you can do or afford. If you are able to buy food and prepare it in your cabin that may be the better option.

Best Western Movieland or Holiday Inn?

    Hi,

Travelling to Orlando in May...have whittled our search down to these two hotels...Holiday Inn and Best Western Movieland!

I would just like some peoples opinions on which hotel is best for location, value and looks although they both look fairly dated

Any opinions would be great..thankyou :-)

  • Birthday free entry-is it a hopper?

Hi, off to Orlando again 20th March.

Does anyone know if the birthday free entry to Disney allow you to use transport to the other parks?

Daughters boyfriend is going with us and has his birthday on the 30th March.

Birthday free entry-is it a hopper?

I believe the ';free birthday entry'; is a base ticket only with no hopper, so you%26#39;d only be able to go to one park.

However, transportation around Disney is free for anyone to use and you don%26#39;t need any kind of ticket to use Disney transportation.

    on the way!!!!

Keys with a four year old.

    Hello,

We are thinking of going to Key Largo/Islamorada or Marathon. Anyone recommend a family friendly resort? Or one with activities for toddlers?

I would be open to other parts of Florida...not Disney LOL

Keys with a four year old.

    Tranquilty Bay or Hawks Cay

Keys with a four year old.

Other choices are Mariners Club or Ocean Pointe. Both are condo properties so you will have a kitchen and separate bedroom. If you put ';toddler'; in the search box for the Florida Keys, you%26#39;ll find lots of ideas of things to do.

Depends on price range you are looking for also, might try Bayside Inn Key Largo, they have a snorkel lagoon which is protected if your toddler can swim, some can at that age. There is Key Largo Princess glass bottom boat ride. There is also Jacobs Aquatic Center in Key Largo. The wild bird sanctuary is a nice place to take toddlers also to get rid of some energy walking go around 4:00 to watch the feeding of the birds you may want to call first to make sure what time feeding is. Theater of the Sea in Islamorada has programs every hour and that is pretty fun for a day. Also feeding the tarpon at Robbies is a great idea also. Hawks Cay is really nice and kids love it. It depends on what price range you are in. Have a great time.

    Crown currency booking

Ok have finally made a booking at the rate of just over $1.5. Now all i have to do is transfer the payment. Fingers crossed all is ok and im a happy girl on 2nd april when the cash arrives x

    Crown currency booking

I received my last order from them last week. I am waiting for it to go higher as I need to order more for April and June.

    Crown currency booking

I made an order from them back in September, which arrived yesterday, a day early. This is the fourth time we have used them,

Dont worry Lauren all should be fine.

Thats great news, we are going in May so getting pretty close so dont want to risk it any more as keeps dropping down way lower than i would want to take. So i had $1.5 in my head and this time when it hit it I just booked!! Done it quick this morning before they updated their rates as i could see the 拢 had dropped a bit and got in just in the nick of time, so im happy!

    Hi

Can I ask if when you placed your order with CC, did they offer you their currency card at all?

I have their currency card booked for April but I am a little concerned that there is no mention of this service on their website. I would expect them to advertise this unless there is some sort of problem. I did speak to them yesterday and they said that there were no problems but I am still a bit concerned.

I have a card from their sister site, travelmoneyservices. I haven%26#39;t used it yet, and am not sure if I will tio it up further.

They called me, as a frequent user last year, and told me they were adding this. They also told me using the card would be %26#39;free%26#39; but I have since learned that there will be a fee for cash withdrawals. They also experienced huge delays in that I didn%26#39;t ge the card when I ordered it and ended up with cash and TCs instead.

Will elt you know how it works out when I eventually use it.

Hi amanx. I read on another of your posts that your prepayment card was going to charge you for withdrawals, but I wasn%26#39;t sure if you were talking about CC card or not.

That is what prompted me to ring CC as I had been assured when I took it that there were no fees. They confirmed to me when I spoke to them yesterday that there were no fees at all. They also said that after an initial delay in the first batch of cards any minor problems with this first batch had been ironed out and there should be no problems in the future.

When will you be using your card, before April?

Tina, that was my problem- they told me no fees when I ordered it too, and I was one of the people who were %26#39;delayed%26#39;.

Now I get it and they say, no fees for purchases, but fees for cash withdrawal and I can%26#39;t say I am over happy about it.

I could use it this month in BDS, but as they will convert to BDS dollars, I won%26#39;t be. I will use it in FL in mid april.

I got it to use last october in FL, but it never arrived so they gave me a $40 credit and sent me the money in cash.

You will get to use it before me as we don%26#39;t go until 25th April. So I will be grateful to hear of your experience with it.

I shall be very unhappy if there ends up being any charges for using it. They have now told me twice that there isn%26#39;t.

I am still wondering why they are not advertising this at all. I can find no mention of it on their website at all. That makes me concerned.

Hi in answer to the above question no i was not offered a currency card sorry x

It ws my understadn=ing they stopped advestising as they were having a problem with the supollier of the cards. I expect they will start advertising again once people get theirs to use. Only got mine last week, and ordered them last year.

  • Where can I buy Mylar Blankets
  • Disney questions

I hope someone can help. I am going to Disney in March and have a package deal with the meal plan.

Can someone please help me and recommed som nice places to eat dinner? Also Will Disney be sending a package in the mail with all of our vouchers and luggage tags etc? How far in advance do thwey send these.

Any suggestions for eating would be great. Also We are staying at the POP Century Resort any comments onthis?

    Disney questions

Well, sadly, you may have waited too late to get the really good places for dining in the DDP plan as most folks get ressies 90 days ahead for the best places.

Take a look at the menus on this page and see if any of these places tempt you:

    http://allears.net/menu/menus.htm

Did you book directly through Disney or with a travel agent?

Pop Century is a value resort and the rooms are basic and kinda small, but it%26#39;s still a nice place. The food court is very busy during peak eating hours, so give yourself plenty of time. Stroll along the lake and read the ';history'; walk signs.

    Disney questions

Thank You for the information. Unfortunately we just booked or reservations for Disney a couple weeks ago so that is why it is so close to the time we are going. That is a really good site that you gave meto go on and look at the menu;s. It was very helpful.

We booked directly through Disney. Do you know when we will receive our Disney Package with all out info and vouchers from them?

Packets arrive about two weeks prior to departure. Call disney dining right away, and try to secure some dining reservations. Be flexible on your days and times and they will do their best, for you!

what are ages of people going to disney.

    Kids? if so how young.

hard to get ressies but try LeCellier in Epcot

    Boma for breakfast in AK

    and do a character breakfast

what are ages of people going to disney.

    Kids? if so how young.

hard to get ressies but try LeCellier in Epcot

    Boma for breakfast in AK

    and do a character breakfast

I think if you are open you may still get some good restaurants. Make a list of the places that interest you and call. They are very helpful when you call. You might have to eat a early dinner to get the restaurant you want or even a late diner (depending on the kids ages if any).

Some of the resort restaurants might have more openings then the park restaurants.

    Enjoy planning.

HI, I too will travel in March. I am 31 days out, I rec%26#39;d my vouchers and luggage tags yesterday (Tues) I also did the dining plan. I would suggest you try Coral Reef in Epcot, if you have kids with you maybe Chef Mickey%26#39;s at the Contemporary Resort. Also, HS has the 50%26#39;s prime time cafe, Sci Fi dine in and Brown Derby. There are menus posted on allears that you can take a look at. I did that and it helped me to decided where I wanted to eat.

We are also going in March, Mid March.

You can still get good reservations.

We had no problem getting into BOMA at AKL, which is absolutely wonderful for any age.

Le Cellier at Epcot we could only get a late lunch. From what I have heard, that is THE restaurant to eat at. Great Steaks.

Tutuitalia (sp?) at epcot, we ate there last year and really enjoyed it. A bit upscale, great Italian food, but I wouldn%26#39;t go there if I weren%26#39;t on the dining plan - too expensive for me.

Chef Mickey is great great fun, but don%26#39;t waste a TS on it, save your TS for something more expensive.

The Disney Dining operator told me to call back close to when we are going to Disney, that most of the cancellations happen then. But do make reservations, you can always cancel.

I just read that 45 days before travel might be a good time to tall due to the fact that people changes plans or can麓t go or pay 45 days before.

I dont know how many days before travel You are, but I would book some restaurants pronto and then change them.

  • Fort Myers in June

We have never been here and are thinking of a trip for our anniversary last week of June. We are beach bums (52 and kids are gone!). We want to be able to kick back on the beach, go in the ocean, read a book, have a drink, go out to a good dinner. Does Fort Myers fit the bill for what we are seeking? How is the weather that time of year?

    Thanks!

    Fort Myers in June

I think June is a perfect month. If you want a resort condo accommodations Pink Shell Beach Resort %26amp; The Diamond Head Resort might fit the bill.

    Fort Myers in June

June is a great time to be here - not horribly hot %26amp; humid yet, low storm risk. Season is over, so you don%26#39;t have the traffic and crowds. The Gulf waters will be warm and calm, perfect for floating. Rates are lower. Fort Myers Beach is exactly the laid-back, relaxing environment you described.

August or September and one other ?

    Hi

We will be heading to Disney this year. What are crowds like at the end of August and does it rain a lot? Is it better to wait until September?

Also has Anyone stayed at the All Star Resorts or the Pop Century? Which is better? We won%26#39;t be in the room a whole lot anyway but we want the better place.

August or September and one other ?

It%26#39;s very, very hot and humid and rains for some time most days.

The parks will be packed and queuing times very long. We%26#39;ve been twice in Aug%26#39; and wouldn%26#39;t go again, mainly due to it being too unbearable. If you can go later in the year, when all the kids are back at school, you%26#39;ll find it far more relaxed and enjoyable!

It rains due to the humidity, so it%26#39;s a welcome relief when it comes, but sometimes, it makes no difference - still far too hot! The first time we went, it rained from about the 4th day onwards for hours every day and that was really annoying. 2nd time was a lot less rain, but far hotter.

August or September and one other ?

when i was there it rained every day, sometimes for hours, sometimes for minutes, one day it rained so hard you could not go out in it

My many experiences at this time of year is that August has more crowds than September, but all other things considered, they are about the same.

Weather in either month is brutally hot, humid, and it rains every day..and I do mean every day. In the many trips I%26#39;ve taken in September, it has rained on us every single day at some point for some duration. In 2007, we had the worst storms I%26#39;ve ever seen the week we were there.

Both months can be prime hurricane months as well, but I wouldn%26#39;t let that stop my plans, as you cannot predict if they will occur or not.

    Ooops, hit reply too soon.

I%26#39;d choose September after the Labor Day holiday since the crowds are so much smaller than in August.

You must wait until after Labor Day however, which this year is Sept. 7th.

We%26#39;re flying out on 25th September, it%26#39;ll be quieter as there are no schools, and its not as hot as August :)

In 2005 we went in mid September. We had two full days without rain, but Hurricane Rita was also moving through while we were there. Because of that, the temps stayed pretty steady in the low 80s. The crowds weren%26#39;t bad at all though...

Thanks - I think we will wait till september then. I would rather not be in the crowds.

    Sea club 1

    Hello

Has anyone stayed at sea club 1 recently? thanks

    Sea club 1

We just got back on Friday the 19th. We spent 6 days there. Unfortunately, it was not the ideal vacation spot for us. We stayed in the beach front 2 bedroom unit---if you want to call it 2 rooms. Very small and not well maintained. We found dead bugs in the window sills and the sliding door tracks. I understand Florida has bugs but I can only assume the room had been empty prior to our arrival and nobody bothered to check it. The only saving grace was our outside deck with full ocean view. The shame is the property has great potential but is neglected!

Also-have you ever heard of having to take your towels to the office for an exchange??? Shame on me for trying some place new. We have been going to Longboat for 20 plus years and fully intend going back to Beach Castle.

    Sea club 1

    Hello

Thanks for your post. I%26#39;m sorry it wasn%26#39;t perfect but that deck oceanfront outlook is rare and I was interested to find out more about the place. Maybe they will smarten up their act and realise what a gem of a spot they have.

We booked Longboat Bay club so here%26#39;s hoping...

Have been going to Sea Club 1 for many years and we love it. The club is right on a gorgeous beach but also has a heated swimming pool and BBQ area. Plenty of loungers. If you have any problems the management will sort it out for you VERY quickly. The units are well equiped, spacious, clean and comfortable with all home comforts. The club is situated in the middle of Longboat which means it%26#39;s a fair drive in either direction for restaurants, bars etc (Sarasota one way, Bradenton the other). However, you have the Hilton about a mile away, a little supermarket across the road, and Publix supermarket about 2 miles away. There is a regular bus service and the stop is almost outside the club. It%26#39;s a quiet location and if that%26#39;s what you are looking for, then this is the place...

Well I am not very clever!!!

Filled in ESTA Form which was approved and I printed it out. However noticed I had made a mistake on year of birth and am unable to correct it or speak to anyone about it.

E Mail sent to American Embassy but I have to apparently wait several weeks for a reply.

    What to do now?

I did my ESTA forms 10 days ago.We were thinking flying into Orlando via London/LGW, with Virgin. and those were the code I used to fill in the forms.

One week later, I found a more suitable flight for us, via Madrid with Iberia...the question is...can we have a problem once at the inmigration official, checking our ESTA forms, and finding different flights/departure city???

We are travelling in about 15 days...a little bit worried...

I put the wrong date of birth for my daughter. Instead of 2003. It came up 1903. When you read the instructions it says for any other changes apart from flights apply again. I have done this and I have kept the two numbers and I am hoping this will be ok.

botega - Have you tried going to te site to amend your flight details? You have plenty of time.

The poster who posted about the date of birth - I think you will just have to wait until they email you back.

not had to use this yet do you still do the forms on the plane?

Hi Littlefpc! I have done exactly the same -I was just going to leave it and see what happens. If you here anything I would be very grateful if you get any answers.

I am going to go on the site again tomorrow to try to amend. Was unable to do it when I tried before.

  • Hotels in Tampa in March

My son (5 years old) and I are going to Tampa mid-March for a week. We are doing all the usual things (Busch Gardens, Zoo, Aquarium, beach for a day in Clearwater, etc) as well as going to see a couple of Yankees training camp games. I need some advice on a hotel to stay at; in a safe area, reasonably priced (less than $150/night) - it doesn%26#39;t need to be anything fancy but nice, preferably one with a breakfast included, close to what we will be doing (although we will be renting a car I don%26#39;t want to spend all my time driving). Any advice would be greatly appreciated, it is hard to tell what is good from the internet. Thanks!

    Hotels in Tampa in March

None of the things you listed are particularly close to each other. I would suggest maybe the Rocky Point area if you don%26#39;t care about being on the Gulf beaches. It is in Tampa, but not too far from Clearwater. It%26#39;s pretty central to all the things you list. Check this site to see what is in your price range for your dates and then you can read the reviews of those hotels. Of course, you can post here if you have more questions once you%26#39;ve narrowed it down!

    Hotels in Tampa in March

I agree with Rocky Point. It is about midway between Clearwater Beach, and Busch Gardens. It is an island in the bay, just to the West of Tampa Intl Airport along Hwy 60. There is also a small beach on it (Ben T. Davis Beach). While it is not like the beaches on the gulf, I%26#39;m sure a 5yo would love to visit it a few times to play, as it will be just minutes from your hotel. There is a Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, and a Doubletree Hotel and the Bay harbor Hotel. There is a brand new Westin that just opened, but it may not be in that $150 budget. These hotels also have an airport shuttle van (not 100% sure about Doubletree, but I have seen the others) which may come in handy if you want to return the rental early.

A few restaurants on the island also, Landrys Seafood House. More casual spots are a Bahama Breeze, Crabby Bills, and Whiskey Joe%26#39;s.

How far between The Sirata Beach Resort and Bush Gardens

I%26#39;m going with my daughter(21) and I%26#39;m wondering how far it is from my hotel and whether I should rent a car for the week or go by taxi for the day.Anyone have any advice as to what to see at Bush Gardens(important stuff). This is My first visit to the area. Thanks

How far between The Sirata Beach Resort and Bush Gardens

Busch Gardens is in Tampa, across the Bay. I would use Google maps to get the exact routing and time estimate, but I%26#39;d guesstimate 45 minutes to an hour.

Definitely get a car if you plan to go to Tampa from SPB; it will give you flexibility to go to Pass A Grille beach, Ft. DeSoto Park, etc. as well as more restaurant choices.

New Rides @ Seaworld & Universal

Any updates on when these will be open I%26#39;ve heard some say spring and some say summer 2009 we go @ end of June.

New Rides @ Seaworld %26amp; Universal

Think I saw Manta was opening in May at SeaWorld, sometime around Memorial Day weekend or just before.

No word on Rip Ride Rocket at Universal yet.

New Rides @ Seaworld %26amp; Universal

opening date for Manta has been announced for the 22nd of May.

BUT bear in mind that this COULD be delayed by many factors...

on the other hand I heared that Seaworld is planning to have the first runnings in March. Which means that they probably have soft openings during the spring already.

only one thing is for sure... NOT very long now and it WILL be running :-)))

RRR in Universal is a little bit behind. As I heared they are not even finished with the rails.

Maybe they can open it until june or July too...

    :-)
